We welcome students from all careers and specialise in offering packages of retraining for ex service personnel, and
in house training for groomers as well as a consultancy service to set up design run and train staff on your site if you are

Each breed of dog has a different requirement for their coat type. There are over 362 kennel club breeds and groomers
have to have a knowledge of all these different breeds, and the grooming techniques for each.
The work involves long periods of standing and heavy lifting, so groomers need to be physically fit.
Groomers need to know all about :
brushing,bathing,drying,dematting,handstripping,clipping,trimming,ear and nail care for all different breeds. As well
as basic pet care to advise owners.
Dog groomers need to be manually dextrous with a good hand to eye coordination & have an eye for detail. A love of
animals is essential along with a great deal of patience & a firm but gentle manner to handle not only the dogs but the
clients too!!
To gain the experience to become a fully qualified groomer, it will normally take students at least 2 year full-time
grooming experience after basic training.
At smartpets we offer course to get you up and running in business so you can earn a living whilst still training and
working towards becoming qualified. Most students come back a few days every few months for ongoing training to work towards
there city and guilds 775 dog grooming certifcate.
Our school specialises in hands on practical grooming tution within a working salon and we aim to provide an informal,
fun and relaxed training atmosphere.
We only train in small groups of 1- to max4 students at any one time for intensive learning. Theory and demonstrations
are done in these small groups with all practical grooming taught on a 1:1 basis with each student having there own work table,
tools and dogs to work on, there is no sharing of dogs and each student will be moved on as fast as he/she can progress.
All training is carried out in a busy working salon so students will have a variety of dogs and can see the realife day
to day operation of a working salon, workplace methods and managment etc which we feel is a valuable piece of training for
those going out to work in a salon or set up a grooming business of there own.
Students wishing to achieve the City and Guilds 775 are advised that all our training is to these standards and we can
aid students with study for both practical and written exams and in finding suitable dogs etc.
Most of our courses cover canine cpr and first-aid /salon & business management seminar days which will be carried
out by our tutors nichola smith & or Anne mc Millian or Nigel Moore
